Water pollution poster contest winners announced
It’s an annual tradition at Marion and Rostraver elementary schools.
During a work session this month, Rostraver Township commissioners announced the six winners of their annual Municipal Separate Storm Sewer System (MS4) poster contest.
According to Township Planner Tamira Spedaliere, Rostraver Township staff visited Marion and Rostraver elementary schools in December and January to give presentations on water pollution. They invited the students to submit a poster on ways they can reduce pollution.
Spedaliere said Rostraver Township received eight poster entries. Commissioners hosted a pizza party for all participants and presented awards and gift certificates to the winners.
• First place winners are Avery Lucking, “Save Earth,” Marion Elementary and Quinn Griest, “Don’t Pollute,” Rostraver Elementary.
• Second-place winners are Gwendolyn Fuller, “Save Our Water,” Marion Elementary, and Caleb Carson, “Clean Up!” Rostraver Elementary.
• Third-place winners are Peyton Johnson, “Save the World,” Marion Elementary, and Allison Macheska, “Stop Spilling Oil,” Rostraver Elementary.
The winning posters are on display at the Rostraver Township Municipal Building, the Rostraver Township Public Library, Rostraver Elementary School and Marion Elementary School.
Commissioners thanked teachers Jennifer Barkey and Sarah Murphy, along with the families of the participants for encouraging the students to participate.
The poster contest is an annual part of Rostraver Township’s Municipal Separate Storm Sewer System (MS4) Program, which is regulated by the EPA and DEP to address water pollution.
The students were tasked with creating posters to show simple things they can do in their daily lives to limit pollution ending up in waterways like the Monongahela and Youghiogheny rivers. More information on the Rostraver Township MS4 program can be found on the Township website www.rostraver.us.
