SA board authorizes sale of field

The Glassport Athletic Field is located along Ohio Street.

In a nine-minute special meeting Monday, the South Allegheny school board voted to approve the sale of land that was formerly the site of baseball and football games.

The Building and Grounds Committee recommended approval of an agreement of sale for Glassport Athletic Field, located at 962 Ohio St.

The 6.47 acres contain two lots and blocks, according to the Allegheny County Real Estate website. One measures 2.848 acres and another that measures 3.62 acres.

The school board authorized solicitors Maiello, Brungo & Maiello to file a petition with the Allegheny County Court of Common Pleas for the approval of the private sale of the property.

“That’s the next step, to petition the court for the private sale,” said Solicitor Falco A. Muscante. “That could take place in August.”

Muscante stated that financial details were not final at the time of the meeting.

Costa Real Estate is handling the listing, which has an asking price of $550,000.

School Board President Shawn Deverse said the former football stadium was recently demolished, and grass was planted in early spring.

Last week at a ribbon-cutting for the new “Welcome to Glassport” sign, which is across the street from the leveled land, Council President Anthony Colecchi said there is interest in the property, which is adjacent to the former Rite Aid at Monongahela and Ninth Streets.

Officials say a Dollar General Market which features fresh produce, meat and a wider variety of refrigerated and frozen foods than the typical store, is being proposed next to the lot.

School board members adjourned the meeting following quick votes.

There were a few residents in attendance, and some of them showed displeasure with the proposed sale. They declined comment afterward besides questioning the board’s advertisement of the meeting.
