New sounds spice up Apple Fest and Greenock Log House Days

The annual celebration of local history will take place Saturday.

For the MVI

Fife players and drummers will add new sounds to the crafters and homecooked food that are the staples of the Apple Fest and Greenock Log House Days on Saturday in Elizabeth Township.

The Apple Fest will offer barbecued chicken, pulled pork and apple dumplings, while Greenock Log House Days will feature the crafters plus colonial reenactors and vendors.

Greenock United Methodist Church will host this annual food fest from noon to 5 p.m., serving chicken, favorite side dishes and baked goods at 1213 Greenock Buena Vista Road.

Chairman Diane Frank said along with the apple dumplings, there will be a bake sale plus many gluten- free items made by church members.

At the Greenock Log House next door, the 8th Pa. Regiment of the Continental Line will pitch their tents to provide hands-on experience with living history from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. Descendants of Native Americans will share stories of their ancestry.

Students of the The Regimental Fife and Drum Unit at Mon Valley Academy of the Arts will be featured performers.

Activities will center around the new mini-barn, which opens as a venue for handcrafted wooden items, including bird houses and feeders and novelty items for Halloween.

Outside, crafters will also sell their creations of jewelry, candles, quilted and sewn items, wreaths and much more.

Linda Bennett, president of the Elizabeth Township Historical Society, which is restoring the 1790 home, draws attention to the recently donated Amish buggy that will provide a perfect setting for a fall photo.

Many other new “old” items have been added to the house to showcase its history. A third birdroom upstairs has been furnished with an additional rope bed, which supports a “tick” mattress filled with straw and/or feathers.

Artists or crafters may still sign up to display and sell their works at the log house by calling 412-8078452 or sending an email to debbiepoppgilbert@gmail. com.

To reserve a 10-foot by 10-foot space, rain or shine, send a $30 check made to ETHS Log House to Debbie Gilbert, 1109 Somerset St., McKeesport, PA 15135.
