A segment of the Great Allegheny Passage in West Mifflin is set to temporarily close for almost a month beginning Thursday evening.
The closure, which will span about two miles from the Whitaker flyover to the Port Perry flyover, is for the removal of loose and potentially unstable material that might dislodge or affect falling rock, according to the Regional Trail Corp. Contractors will begin work Friday.
The section is expected to remain closed until Aug. 6.
There is no detour. Instead, a licensed shuttle service will provide transportation from 8:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. seven days a week until the project is completed.
The shuttle is $20 per person, and a one-way shuttle takes about 20 minutes.
On the eastern end, the shuttle service will stop where the GAP intersects East Grant Avenue.
On the western end, the shuttle service will use the GAP-branded trail access area at the Waterfront, which is at 191 East Waterfront Drive, Homestead.
Cyclists and hikers can also use Pittsburgh Regional Transit’s 59 or 61C bus routes.
