At a scarcely attended special meeting Tuesday evening, McKeesport Area School Board voted to hire Dr. Mark Holtzman Jr. as superintendent, after first accepting his resignation from the same position.
In the end, it means Holtzman will remain at the helm of MASD for five years.
The meeting was held virtually, and Holtzman was not present.
In the first order of business, board directors Diane Elias, Tom Filotei, Ivan Hampton, Jim Poston and board President Joe Lopretto all voted to accept Holtzman’s resignation “subject to the details of the resignation letter.”
His letter was not read during the meeting.
Board directors James Brown, Dave Donato, Steven Kondrosky and Mindy Sturgess were all absent.
No directors who were at Tuesday’s meeting voted against the motion.
In a second motion, the board in attendance unanimously voted to appoint Holtzman to the position of superintendent effective today and lasting through June 30, 2026, “subject to the terms and conditions upon execution of a written agreement between the parties.”
In a phone call with the Mon Valley Independent after the meeting, Solicitor Gary Matta explained that the public school code requires superintendents in Pennsylvania has to be in the last year of their contract before they can sign a one, unless they resign.
Holtzman was hired as superintendent at a special meeting March 29, 2017, at a salary of $140,000, according to minutes from that meeting.
