Chas Mrlack and Che Hill each recorded hat tricks to help lead Monessen to a 10-1 Senior Day victory over California in Section 4-A play Wednesday.
Playing in his final game at Monessen High School’s soccer field, Mrlack netted four goals and added a pair of assists for the Greyhounds (3-7, 3-7). He scored the first three goals of the game and completed his hat trick by the 21:58 mark in the first half.
“I knew it was my last game, so I was just like, ‘Screw it, I’m going to go out there and do what I do,’” Mrlack said. “I could really do that every game if I wanted to, but I try to stay humble and not score as much. I usually try not to be a ball hog and be more of a facilitator for the team.”
Mrlack scored his first goal less than a minute into the game before adding his second less than two minutes later. On the latter goal, he weaved around a California defender and scored to push Monessen’s lead to two goals.
Mrlack scored with just under 22 minutes left to give the Greyhounds the 3-0 lead they held heading into halftime. His fourth goal came with 7:33 left in the second half.
“I was really impressed with the way Chas played,” Monessen assistant coach Joe Gigliotti said. “He played a hell of a game. He hustled both ways and I was happy to see him get a hat trick.”
