Laurel hadn’t been scored upon in its first four games of the season, but Clairton found the end zone five times Friday night in a 33-7 win over the Spartans in a matchup of two of the top-ranked teams in Class A.
Laurel (4-1) took an early 7-0 lead on a 4-yard touchdown run by Daniel Blake, but didn’t score again.
“We knew they were going to come in here feeling like they wanted to do the same thing to us,” said Clairton head coach Wayne Wade. “That first drive and them going down to score showed a lot about our team. We were able to face adversity and we knew we were in a dogfight so we went down and scored to show them you’re in Clairton.”
The Bears answered on their first drive of the game as quarterback Brendan Parsons scored on a 2-yard run to tie the game at 7-7 with 7:15 to go in the first quarter.
“It was huge for him (to get off to a hot start),” said Wade. “Parsons is a three-year guy for us and he is still learning the offense because we have a new offensive coordinator this year. I think he is starting to understand what he wants and our offensive coordinator has all of his weapons.”
