Fred J. Fundy – North Belle Vernon

NORTH BELLE VERNON Fred J. Fundy, 91, of North Belle Vernon, passed away Wednesday, Nov. 26, 2025, at Penn Highlands Mon Va l l e y Hospital. Born Giovanni Antonio Ferdinando Fontana, Fred was born on May 20, 1934, to the late John and Assunta Santoro Fundy at their home on Morgan Avenue in Monessen. He spent his childhood there until moving to North Belle Vernon in 1943. During his formative years, Fred learned from his father how to build and fix almost anything. One of his many interests was fixing and racing automobiles, and he could tell the year and make of any car with authority. In the 1950s and 1960s, he achieved notable victories in drag racing in his Hudson Wasp and his Rambler American. As a teenager, Fred was a hard worker, starting at Rolley’s (automotive), pumping gas and washing cars. After graduation from Bellmar High School in North Belle Vernon in 1952, he joined the United States Army and served in Germany during the Korean War. After his military service, Fred enrolled in California State University, earning a bachelor’s degree in secondary education with a minor in English. In 1962, Fred married Betty Fedor, and they built a life in Belle Vernon with their five children and nearby extended family. At that same time, Fred began teaching at his alma mater, Bellmar High School, where he continued teaching until 1966. He then transitioned to government work, where he held various positions before retiring from his role as Deputy for Small Businesses in 1993. After retirement, Fred continued his community involvement by serving as code enforcement officer and zoning officer for North Belle Vernon Borough for 20 years. Fred was an avid reader, an outstanding public speaker, and a skilled writer of “Letters to the Editor” to the local newspaper. For many years, his communication skills led him to act as the master of ceremonies for both the Memorial Day services at North Belle Vernon Cemetery and for the annual North Belle Vernon Fire Department banquet. Fred was also known for arranging many of his and Betty’s class reunions, and he initiated the annual “All Bellmar Class Reunion,” which is still held to this day. Throughout his life, Fred was involved with numerous community organizations. He held leadership roles in the Cub Scouts, the Italian American Heritage Society of Monessen, the Refuse Authority of Belle Vernon, the National Active and Retired Federal Employees Association, the Belle Vernon Area VFW and several local credit unions. As a lifetime member of the North Belle Vernon Volunteer Fire Department, he served as President, Vice President and Recording Secretary. He was also a member of the St. Sebastian Church Parish Council, the American Legion, the Italian Society of Mutual Aid and the North Belle Vernon Historical Society. The most important thing in the world to Fred was his family, of whom he was extremely proud. His legacy is marked by his family, his dedication to public service, his community involvement and the many lives he touched through his work and volunteerism. Fred is survived by his five children; John (Carrie) Fundy, Mary Ann (John) Fuhry, Fred (Denise) Fundy, Joanne (Jeff) Jones and Susan (Tim) Donaldson; seven grandchildren, Tyler (Kelsey), T.J. (Danielle), Lissa, Neal, Dominic (Allie), Sam and Michelle; and one great-grandchild, Jensyn. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his wife, Elizabeth M. Fedor; siblings, Frank F. Fundy, Attilio F. Fundy, Eleanor Mancuso, Delilah Stipoli, Loretta Hadjantoni and Mary Praskavich; and grandson, Freddy Fundy. Visitation will be held from 2 to 4 and 6 to 8 p.m. Sunday, Nov. 30, 2025, at PARZYNSKI FUNERAL HOME & CREMATIONS LLC, family owned and operated, 626 Broad Ave., Belle Vernon, 724-9296183. Prayers of Transfer will be held at 10 a.m. Monday in the funeral home, followed by funeral Mass at 10:30 a.m.at St. Sebastian Roman Catholic Church with the Rev. Michael Thomas as celebrant. Interment will take place in Belle Vernon Cemetery. Members of the North Belle Vernon Fire Department will conduct services at 7 p.m. Sunday in the funeral home. The family suggests memorial contributions be made in memory of Fred J. Fundy to North Belle Vernon Volunteer Fire Department or the North Belle Vernon Public Library. Condolences accepted at the funeral home’s website, www.parzynskifuneralhome. com.
