Leopards drop tough one at McGuffey

The Belle Vernon girls soccer team came up just short in a 3-2 loss against McGuffey Monday.

The Leopards (3-4, 2-2) went into halftime tied 1-1, and it was tied at 2-2 with 11 minutes left when McGuffey got a penalty kick and converted it to win.

“We stepped it up and made a push after the penalty kick, but we just could not find the back of the net in those final minutes,” said Belle Vernon coach Tracy Lovett.

Abby Russell scored on a goal assisted by Grace West in the first half, and Courtney Martin bagged a goal in the second half.

Skylar Salay and Rori Bastedo combined to make 12 saves for the Leopards, who will return to play Wednesday at Keystone Oaks.

Indiana 3, Elizabeth Forward 2

Julia Antonacci made 9 saves to help lead the Indians (2-4, 2-1) to a win over the visiting Warriors Monday.

Maicee Smith had both goals for the Warriors (1-3, 1-3) and Caylin Seabol added an assist. Adysson Davis made four saves for EF.

Emily Betsinger, Sophia Scardina and Madelyn Williams each scored for Indiana.

The Warriors are back in section play Wednesday when they host Greensburg Salem.

Kiski Area 1, West Mifflin 0 (2OT)

Sophia Hranica scored the winning goal, assisted by Addison Bell, and Bria Bires recorded the shutout to lead Kiski Area (3-3, 3-1) past West Mifflin (1-4, 0-3).

Steel Valley 3, Ringgold 0

The Ironmen (2-3, 1-2) picked up their first Section 1-2A win of the campaign with a shutout of Ringgold (2-3, 1-3).

No scoring information was reported.

The Rams travel to South Park Wednesday.

McKeesport 5, Serra Catholic 3

The Tigers picked up their first win of the season over rival Serra Catholic (0-4).

No game or scoring information was reported.

McKeesport (1-3) will host Highlands Wednesday while the Eagles will host Seton LaSalle the same evening.

Keystone Oaks 2, Charleroi 0

Keystone Oaks grabbed a Section 1-2A victory over Charleroi Monday night.

No scoring information was reported.

The Cougars (0-5, 0-4) will return to action at Waynesburg Central Thursday.

Aquinas Academy 2, South Allegheny 0

Aquinas Academy scored a goal in each half to seal a Section 3-1A win against South Allegheny.

No other scoring information was reported.

South Allegheny (2-4, 0-3) will look to get back to its winning ways Wednesday at Sewickley Academy.

Golf Boys Charleroi 210, Geibel 231 The Cougars picked up a Section 8-2A win Monday at Pleasant Valley Golf Course, routing the Gators by 21 strokes.

No one for Charleroi shot higher than a 44 as the Cougars were led by Jake Corrin’s 40.

Kaden Woods and Ethan Hartley each hit a 42 with Josh Chambers and Gage Patterson each finishing at 43.

Geibel (0-9, 0-9) was led by Mike Miller’s 41.

The Cougars (9-3, 8-2) host Uniontown today.

Belle Vernon 190, Connellsville 204

The Leopards remained unbeaten with a win over the Falcons at Pleasant Valley Golf Course Monday.

Seth Tomalski was the medalist for the day, firing a 1-under par 34 to lead all golfers.

Jordan Mocello added a 37 for the Leopards (12-0, 9-0) and Jack Edwards hit a 39.

The Falcons were led by Matt Firestone and Eli Armstrong, both finished with a 39.

BVA will host Albert Gallatin Friday.

Elizabeth Forward 196, Frazier 219

The Warriors traveled to Linden Hall Monday and returned home with a win over the Commodores.

Aaron Didjunas took home medalist honors with a 37 to lead EF. Dom Donato shot a 39 and Julian Hredocik, Blake Hvozdik and Luke Boyer all finished with a 40.

Aidan Hardy led the Commodores with a 41. Travis Smith and Eli Cernuska each shot a 42.

The Warriors are home with Charleroi Friday. Frazier travels to Charleroi Wednesday.

South Allegheny 237, Steel Valley 321

Josh Nesky was the medalist with a 36 (-1) as the Gladiators came up with a lopsided win over the Ironmen.

Noah Cortes (46), Mason Campano (47), Mason Jobes (53) and Cam Colecchi (55) slotted in behind Nesky for the Gladiators.

Yough 249, Neighborhood Acad. 315

Yough came up with a strong win over Neighborhood Academy behind a 39 from Anthony Bonari.

The Cougars (2-10) got a 48 from Carl Singer, a 52 from Ian Toman, and a 55 from Dallys Swank and Nate Bell.

Neighborhood Academy was led by Ben Janovik’s 46.

Volleyball Ringgold 3, South Allegheny 1

The Rams (3-1) topped the Gladiators (4-2) in non-section play Monday.

Ringgold travels to Albert Gallatin today with South Allegheny hosting Steel Valley.

Serra Catholic 3, Seton LaSalle 1

The Eagles went up 2-0 and then dropped a set before rebounding to come up with another victory early this season.

Cassidy Trahan posted 27 kills and 26 digs and Beth Pasternak finished with 16 assists and nine digs as Serra Catholic captured sets 25-19, 25-23, and 25-21 with an 18-25 setback in the third set.
