Ringgold School Board voted Tuesday to accept a proposal from HHSDR to take a step toward demolishing Finley Middle School and finding new life for the property.
Board directors Harley Bobnar, Carol Flament, Gene Kennedy and Maureen Ott and President Bill Stein voted to accept a $36,800 proposal from HHSDR “for the preparation and issuance of bid documents, and $9,200 for the construction administration phase for the Finley Middle School demolition.”
Directors James Dodd and Lawrence Mauro voted against the proposal. Directors Sherrie Garry and Jason Gerard were absent.
The vote came after some discussion among board members about whether the property where Finley Middle School stands should be used for future development or if the district should seek another, more centrally located site for development instead of giving new life to the site on Route 88 in Finleyville.
Although the building has been vacant since 2017, the district still uses fields behind the building for youth football, soccer practice and other activities. Ringgold has wanted to sell or subdivide the property since it became vacant, but hasn’t gotten acceptable offers.
