No one injured as excavator falls into hole in Washington

It’s part of a demolition project for the Washington County Courthouse Square parking garage.

An excavator fell into a hole during demolition of the Washington County Courthouse Square parking garage in the City of Washington Tuesday morning, emergency dispatchers said.

A county spokesperson said the operator of the excavator was checked out at the scene and did not go to the hospital. The structure is being torn down to make way for a new Washington County Public Safety building, with construction expected to begin this summer.

“Washington County turned over the Courthouse Square site to Adamo Construction on Monday, March 2, to start demolition of the building with public notice of the construction timeline and safety. The county is aware of an accident involving a piece of construction equipment this morning on the site. The operator was checked out at the scene as a precautionary measure,” according to a statement issued by Nicole Ford, Washington County’s director of public relations. “County leaders have requested a public safety incident report from the general contractor including the name of the operator and the company he was employed by as well as an update on the operators condition.”
