A solid start by Yough and a tie game evaporated in the fifth inning, as 5A competitor Upper St. Clair scored 10 runs in the frame to take the 14-4 victory at Boyce Mayview Park.
“Our first two scrimmages were against Norwin and Latrobe which are very good programs, as is Upper St. Clair. We put ourselves early on with teams we want to try to compete. We just want to see progression and improvement,” said Yough head coach Craig Spisak.
The Cougars are a young squad with few seniors on the roster. Seniors who of course haven’t played varsity baseball since sophomore year.
“We have one returning starter from two years ago so we have a lot of kids who are just learning the varsity level of play. We did some good things and we did some bad things, so we need to improve on the bad things,” Spisak said.
The Cougars got a solid outing from veteran starting pitcher Sean Royer. The right-hander pitched into the fifth inning but reached the 70s in pitch count and that’s where Spisak wanted to keep him this early in the season.
“I thought overall, couple walks, little bit of control midway through there, but not too much solid contact, he kept them off-balance and was fairly efficient. I was pretty happy with how his outing was,” said Spisak.
