Fine start for Frazier

Frazier snapped a three-game losing streak to Charleroi in a big way Friday night to open Century Conference play.

The Commodores (1-0, 1-0) blanked the Cougars, 34-0, as Kenny Fine gained 120 yards on seven carries, including an 89-yard touchdown run to open the scoring. The senior also pulled in two receptions for 89 yards.

Fine’s second catch was on a short pass to the flat, and he turned on the jets for an 81-yard touchdown.

“I loved the way our defense played with our aggressiveness and Bob Acklin had a great game at defensive end, but we could go all around,” Frazier coach Greg Boggs said. “We showed signs of life last year, but this was a very young team.

“We still have a ways to go, but we are trying to put it all together. I thought the kids came out today and played great football.”

Boggs knew that Charleroi (0-1, 0-1) would be looking to stop Fine, and the rest of the offense was ready to contribute. Shawn Fordyce had two catches for 19 yards and a touchdown, Christian Mingrino gained 57 yards rushing on eight carries and Luke Santo gained 83 yards on three receptions with one touchdown.

Brayden Boggs was 9-of-12 for 198 yards and threw three touchdowns. Coach Boggs was impressed not only with the quarterback play, but also his offensive line.

“Luke made some plays and Brayden called some audibles and made the adjustments,” Boggs said. “Christian Mingrino back at tailback runs hard and downhill.

“There are still pieces of the puzzle to put it all together. Kenny is outstanding. Any play can go all the way, but we have other people stepping up as well. I was also very pleased with the way our offensive line played. The guys up front make it happen.”

The Cougars had chances to score, but Frazier forced three turnovers on downs, recovered two fumble and scored on Jonathan Kubitza’s 78-yard interception return for a touchdown with 7:24 left in the game.
