Tyrol Boulevard work set for late summer

PennDOT will be open bids next month for a contract which includes drainage repairs on Tyrol Boulevard.
The work is designed to replace a collapsed and clogged drain pipe under the road near the Westmoreland Sanitary Landfill which at times has resulted in debris and slippery mud on the roadway.
“We’re putting together a contract for four drainage concerns around Westmoreland County,” said Liberty Hill, the PennDOT Plans Engineer on the project. “We expect construction late summer into the fall. They may start on one of the other sites first.”
Hill said the old culvert will be replaced with a larger culvert and the roadway will be repaired where it has been sinking.
“There is a pipe under the roadway and it’s failing. It’s 50 to 75 feet from the driveway of the landfill and it’s collapsing and clogging. They’ll be putting in rock swales where the water goes into the pipe and on the other side too, so it doesn’t wash out,” Hill said.
The work will take four to six weeks to complete, with a detour in place for about a week of that time and lane restrictions during the rest of it in order to have the least possible impact on businesses in the area.
“We’re limiting how much time they can actually close the road,” Hill said.
Rostraver Township officials say the problem, which includes mud and debris on the roadway and a washed out berm, has been exacerbated by the Westmoreland Sanitary Landfill washing down the road as required by the state Department of Environmental Protection to clear mud dragged onto the road from its trucks.
Township Commissioner Devin DeRienzo, the township’s health and welfare chairman, said he was glad to see that the culvert project was able to be fast-tracked, despite construction delays caused by the COVID-19 pandemic. The project was initially delayed by winter, DeRienzo said.
