MVI-BeeGraphix Mat Warriors Coach of the Year

Saying Elizabeth Forward wrestling coach Richard Scheuermann is a veteran on the bench is an understatement.
This season, the Warriors were flooded with talent, young and old. He helped guide three of those wrestlers to the PIAA championships, helping him to be named the Mon Valley Independent-BeeGraphix Mat Warriors Coach of the Year.
Scheuermann had representation in Hershey from a pair of seniors in Ryan Michaels and Ethan Cain, a Seton Hill recruit, at the state tournament. But his best work might have been done with sophomore Dylan Bruce, who overcame an early season injury and a rough start to outperform his seeding in every postseason tournament on the way to his first PIAA appearance.
Michaels is a former Campbell commit, but reopened his recruitment after Camels head coach Cary Kolat left the program to take over at Navy. Cain will head to Seton Hill University where he’ll continue to wrestle.
“Coach Sherm’s best qualities are definitely his way with words and how he’s able to teach something in different ways,” Cain said. “Some wrestlers learn visually, some learn physically and some learn through listening to moves step by step. Coach Sherm was always able to adapt to everyone’s different styles of learning and make sure that no matter what they would learn the skill or move he was teaching.”
The Warriors won Class 2A Subsection 3B with a 5-0 record in duals. They went on to an 11-4 overall mark and reached the WPIAL quarterfinals for the third straight season.
“The one thing about Coach is he’s still always learning,” Michaels added. “He always finds new techniques and tries to show them to me and the other members of the team.”
Scheuermann takes the time to look into the future of his team members, helping out with recruiting and getting them to the level they desire.
“He reached out to coaches and gave them my information. He was able to give me advice on each school,” Michaels said.
