Post-holiday electric bills have some people scrambling for alternatives, but state officials say shop wisely when seeking an energy provider.
State Rep. Mike Puskaric, R-Finleyville, issued a Facebook notice recently suggesting that residents in his legislative district should shop smart.
“The Pennsylvania Public Utility Commission (PUC) is alerting consumers about the potential for large winter energy cost increases for electric customers who do not shop for competitive electric suppliers,” Puskaric wrote. “To avoid the possibility of ‘sticker shock’ from high bills during the coming cold months, the PUC reminds consumers that the start of winter is an important time to compare prices for electric generation and evaluate competitive supplier options.”
Just under one-third of Pennsylvanians use an alternative electric provider, according to the PUC, but not all of them are saving money.
“A lot of times what you are finding with third-party providers is that there are a lot of fees between them and the suppliers,” Puskaric said. “The biggest thing we can tell people is to be cautious and read the fine print.”
