Charleroi cancels meeting, closes offices due to heat

Borough officials made the announcement in a notice that was posted Tuesday.

Charleroi Borough has canceled tonight’s agenda meeting and will close its administrative offices through the remainder of the week as dangerous heat continues to grip the region.

In a notice posted Tuesday, borough officials announced the July 1 agenda meeting has been called off because of the extreme heat.

The borough office will close at noon today and remain closed Thursday. Offices were already scheduled to be closed Friday in observance of the Independence Day holiday.

“Charleroi Borough Council agenda meeting for Wednesday July 1 has been canceled due to extreme temperatures,” the borough said in a statement. “Borough offices will be open July 1 until 12:00 p.m. and then closed the remainder of the day and will remain closed until Monday July 6. If there is an emergency you may contact the borough manager at 724-2638543. We apologize for any inconvenience and urge all citizens to remain safe and check on those who may need assistance.”

According to the agenda, council was expected to discuss a recommendation letter of support for Club Serenity’s grant request and a formal recommendation letter for the Charleroi Fire Department related to a Local Share Account grant, review the Market House application and rental rates for individual and community use, consider a Corning/ Corelle Brand memorial and discuss administrative office temperatures.

The National Weather Service in Pittsburgh has warned that the region will remain under dangerous heat through at least Friday night. High temperatures are expected to reach the mid- to upper 90s each day, while humidity will push heat index values above 100 degrees.

Meteorologists attribute the prolonged heat to a strong ridge of high pressure, often called a “heat dome,” that traps hot air over the region while limiting thunderstorm development.

Overnight temperatures are expected to remain in the mid-70s, offering little relief from the daytime heat.

A change in the weather pattern is expected late in the week as the ridge weakens, bringing the possibility of showers and thunderstorms Friday and into the holiday weekend. Forecasters say some storms could produce damaging winds, although confidence in the timing and severity remains low.

The weather service reminds residents that extreme heat is the nation’s deadliest weather hazard and encourages people to stay hydrated, avoid prolonged outdoor activity during the hottest part of the day and check on older adults, young children and other vulnerable neighbors.
