Minor flooding could hit the Mon Valley over the next two days as the area is hit with rain.
While a similar amount of precipitation in the summer months doesn’t usually cause a problem, an inch and a half of rain in 24 hours at this time of year can send the Monongahela River over its banks, according to lead meteorologist Pat Herald at the National Weather Service in Pittsburgh.
“We’re getting an inch to an inch and a half of rain here, which is enough to cause flooding this time of year. With the leaves off of the trees, it takes a lot less rain for the river to rise,” Herald said. “There is a big difference between the seasons.”
A flood watch has been issued from midnight today until around 7:30 p.m. Wednesday.
