For the opening 20 minutes, Elizabeth Forward’s girls soccer team gave defending section champion Belle Vernon Area all it could handle Wednesday.
But the Leopards eventually found their way to an 8-2 Section 2-3A win at Warriors Stadium.
Things started out well for the Warriors, as Anna Resnik scored on a 38-yard high shot that went over the head of BVA keeper Grace Henderson to give EF a 1-0 lead.
“The first 20-25 minutes, I thought we played them about as even as we could have,” EF head coach Brandon Gerba said.
While Gerba was pleased, his counterpart on the BVA sidelines wasn’t too pleased.
“I thought we came out a little sluggish in the first half,” BVA coach Tracy Lovett said. “We started a little slow and they caught us on that first goal. Grace even said she wasn’t expecting it and we had no pressure on her. That’s something we’ll learn from.”
