There is officially a new captain in at the McKeesport Fire Department.
Mayor Michael Cherepko promoted firefighter Jason Arndt to the position of captain at Wednesday’s council meeting.
He is taking over the position left vacant when firefighter Jeff List was promoted to deputy chief last month.
Arndt was one of the city’s first part-time firefighters when he started working with the department about 15 years ago, according to Cherepko. He was promoted to full-time in 2012.
The mayor said Arndt had to undergo a civil service test, an oral interview and had to submit a written test before he was named captain.
He described Arndt as “a gentleman” and “a servant of the city.”
Fire Chief Jeffrey Tomovcsik said he is happy that Arndt has been named captain.
“Jason is one of our better trained and more motivated firefighters,” the chief said. “I am glad that we can continue to call him an asset to the city’s fire department and that he has been placed into a leadership role.”
Arndt thanked Cherepko, council and Tomovcsik and told them that he hopes he can make them proud.
A career fire department, there are 20 full-time firefighters, 12 part-time firefighters, one city electrician and the chief.
