Robert E. “Lefty” Squires Sr., 91, of McKeesport, died April 28, 2019, at UPMC McKeesport. Born Sept. 25, 1927, in McKeesport, he was the son of the late John and Clara Jakoski Squires and the husband of Irene M. Kustra Squires for over 67 years. Lefty retired from U.S. Steel National Tube Works, where he was a millwright in the boiler shop. He was a U.S. Army veteran, serving during World War II. Lefty was a member of PNA 352 of McKeesport, and the YMCA, formerly of McKeesport and Wilmerding. He was also a retired high school and college basketball and football official. He was a retired member of the West Penn Basketball and Football Officials Association. Lefty had a passion for sports, coaching Little League Baseball in his earlier years. He was an avid Steelers, Penguins and Pirates fan. He loved polka music, dancing, hunting, gardening and swimming at the YMCA. Lefty’s greatest love was his family. In addition to his wife, Lefty is also survived by his children, Linda (Robert) Gibala of McKeesport, Robert (Arlene) Squires Jr. of White Oak and David (Lisa) Squires of Pelham, Ala.; 13 grandchildren and 14 great-grandchildren; and brother, Theodore “Ted” (Loretta) Squires of McKeesport. Lefty was also preceded in death by his brother, Jack Squires. Family and friends will be received at Jaycox-Jaworski Funeral Home & Crematory from 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 p.m. Thursday, May 2, 2019. Mass of Christian burial will be celebrated at 10 a.m. Friday, May 3, 2019, at Corpus Christi Church. Committal prayers and burial will follow in St. Mary’s Polish Cemetery.
