A fire early Sunday morning that destroyed an abandoned home in Charleroi appears to be suspicious, according to fire chief Bob Whiten Jr.

Responding around 4 a.m. Sunday to the vacant structure fire on the 700 block of Third Street in Charleroi were the Charleroi Fire Department along with crews from Lock 4, Fallowfield Township, Stockdale and Monessen No. 1 volunteer fire departments and the rapid intervention team from Bentleyville Volunteer Fire Department.

Whiten said crews were on scene for several hours, adding that flames and smoke were “pouring out from everywhere.”

“We don’t know exactly how it started, but this fire had to be set because there was no utilities to this structure at all,” Whiten said. “Something seems suspicious about it because it was packed full of garbage.
