McKeesport’s Kane Center to hold annual Fun Walk

The Kane Foundation was formed to raise private funds to enhance the quality of life for residents at Kane Community Living Centers.

The Kane Foundation will host the 15th annual Joan Burns Fun Walk 4 Kane at the community living center in McKeesport on Saturday to raise money for resident activities and outings.

Registration begins at 8 a.m., followed by the walk at 9:30 a.m. A picnic featuring picnic food, snacks, dessert, music and karaoke will take place afterwards. The registration fee is $25; the first 100 people who sign up will receive a free T-shirt.

The Kane Community Living Center is located at 100 Ninth Ave., McKeesport.

The walkers start at the community living center, stroll on down to the Palisades and return to the starting point.

The Fun Walk 4 Kane was named in honor of Joan Burns, a co-founder who was involved with the first two iterations of the event before she passed away in 2013. Burns dedicated her life to teaching and advocating for the elderly. Joan along with her cousin, Janet Kulis, co-founded the Kane McKeesport Family Council in 2009 to support and encourage families and residents giving them a voice to make positive change.

The walk is one of the most anticipated yearly events for Kane residents.

Money raised helps to ensure residents have access to adult education classes, sporting events, holiday parties, trips to museums, shows, shopping, restaurants, pet therapy and more. There are several corporate/organizational sponsorship opportunities available for the event online at Fun Walk 4 Kane. Donations are tax deductible.

“Kane residents love to participate at the Walk. It is a social event for them where they get to see old friends and meet new people, which keeps them involved in the community, Kulis said. “It is surprising to see so many people from the McKeesport area come to the Walk to help support the residents and the Kane Community Center by giving their time and energy. Their participation each year has been a true blessing to the residents.”

There are four Kane Community Living Centers in Allegheny County located in Glen/Hazel, Scott Township, Ross Township and McKeesport, providing nursing and rehabilitation services for elderly people and adults.

Kulis encourages area residents to register for the walk or make a donation online at: https://www.alleghenycounty. us/Events-Directory/ Kane/Fun-Walk-4-Kane
