History lessons in Monessen
As the school year ended, Monessen Elementary Center third-grade teacher Jordan Goydich invited a representative of the Greater Monessen Historical Society to talk to her students about the City of Monessen’s history. Historical society volunteer Tamara Bojsen talked with the students about Native American tribes in the area and saw a collection of arrowheads. They learned how Monessen got its name and the birth of the steel industry. They were shown steelworker lunch boxes, safety glasses, hardhats and other realia. They also couldn’t believe that six people on the Titanic were headed to Monessen. Any group interested in hearing about Monessen history can visit the museum at 505 Donner Ave. Admission is free.
