A youth athletic association in White Oak said petty cash was stolen from its lower baseball and softball concession stand, with thieves leaving behind only a lone penny.

The White Oak Athletic Association posted about the incident in a side-by-side image comparing the nearly empty tray to a classic holiday cartoon on social media on Friday.

“Unlike the Grinch, they did leave us a crumb … one lonely penny, along with a few other coins that must have slipped through their greedy little hands on the way out,” the post said.

The White Oak Athletic Association is a community- run nonprofit that organizes and operates youth sports programs. It provides leagues for baseball, softball and basketball to children in White Oak and surrounding areas.

“Money and funding are already extremely tough … bills are up, community support is stretched, and every dollar truly matters,” the association’s post said. “Instead of putting those funds toward equipment, field improvements, events, uniforms, and opportunities for our players, we now have to spend even more on additional security measures because of a selfish and heartless act.”

On Sunday, the post had more than a dozen com- ments asking how to donate and more than 60 likes.

“This is awful. Your organization has always been kind to our players and teams and has fostered one of the best “rivalries” we have in rec ball. For someone to see the GOOD that your organization does and see an opportunity to take advantage of that goodness is disappointing and enraging,” said one commenter. “I hope the person(s) that did this returns everything to make good with the community.”

The post did not detail how much money had been stolen, but said White Oak Borough Police Department was investigating.

Neither the White Oak Athletic Association nor the police department could be reached for comment.
