Sound of gunshot prompts lockdown
Police investigated and determined there was no danger to the community.
Monessen schools temporarily went on a lockdown Tuesday as a precautionary measure after a gunshot was heard in the area.
Superintendent Dr. Robert Motte announced Tuesday morning that schools were in a precautionary lockdown. He added that local police investigated reports of a possible gunshot sound in the community near the school area, but found there was no direct threat to buildings or students.
Motte told families the district was working closely with law enforcement.
Schools remained on lockdown until police advised them it was safe to reopen.
Monessen Police Chief Dave Yuhasz said “a shot was heard at the elementary school.”
He also heard it while working outside at his home and said “it sounded farther away.”
Yuhasz said that “as a precaution the school shut down and officers patrolled the area and determined there was no immediate threat to the community.”
Following the investigation, Motte issued an afternoon update stating that “the Monessen Police Department conducted a thorough investigation and has confirmed that there is no active threat. All students, staff, and community members are safe, and we have been cleared to resume normal activities.”
He offered gratitude to faculty, staff, parents and the Monessen Police Department for responding quickly, taking the situation seriously and helping ensure the safety of everyone in the schools.
