Teen flown to hospital after being shot in the head
Monessen schools are holding a flexible instruction day in response to the incident.
A 16-year-old is in UPMC Children’s Hospital of Pittsburgh after being shot in the head Tuesday afternoon in Monessen.
Monessen Police Chief David Yuhasz declined to release the victim’s name, but said he seemed stable when he was flown by medical helicopter to the hospital. His official condition hasn’t been made available.
The shooting took place around 4:15 p.m. near Rostraver Road and Linden Avenue. Our news partners at WTAE reported that the victim was in a car with two other people, but no one else was hit.
WTAE was told by the Westmoreland County District Attorney’s Office that one person was taken into custody in connection with the shooting and that charges were expected to be filed Tuesday night. Yuhasz didn’t confirm that an arrest had been made.
In response to the shooting, Monessen City School District is operating today on a flexible instruction day.
“The safety of our students and staff is our top priority,” the district stated. “We will continue to monitor the situation closely and reassess conditions tomorrow. Updates will be shared with families as soon as possible.”
