Monessen chief: False alarm at credit union
Monessen police responded to suspicious activity Friday involving an unattended bag around Valley 1st Community Federal Credit Union.
Police Chief David Yuhasz said a man had been making a suspicious number of transactions at the credit union. Police noticed the behavior earlier in the week, and some events on Friday escalated the situation.
Yuhasz said there was no robbery, no one was hurt and no charges were filed against anyone.
On Friday, police noticed that the person who had been making transactions at the credit union was walking in and out of the woods multiple times. He left an unattended bag around Sixth Street and Knox Avenue, which prompted authorities to investigate what was inside and close down the area.
In response, the Monessen School District redirected buses to different stops.
Yuhasz said eventually they interacted with the man who left the bag and took him to meet with his brother. They also brought a bomb-sniffing dog to check the bag, but nothing dangerous was found.
Yuhasz added that they were afraid the bag was a distraction, so they had another officer at the credit union as a precaution.
