PAGES OF THE PAST

• Julia Urdanis is passionate about egg-shaped art. For the last 35 years, the 67-yearold Hungarian artist has practiced the art of pysanky, making elaborately decorated Ukrainian Easter eggs. Pysanky has been practiced in Eastern Europe for more than 2,000 years. Urdanis’s family moved to the United States when she was 13 and settled in Bentleyville. Her home looks like an art gallery with her treasured eggs displayed in glass cases. Though the eggs were traditionally given as gifts to wish a friend good luck, Urdanis has trouble parting with her creations. In addition to creating traditional designs, Urdanis likes to experiment saying, “I let the egg speak to me.”
