Veterans dispose of flags in traditional burning ceremony

More than 1,500 American flags from five area cemeteries were burned.

American Legion Post 28 and VFW Post 1190 held their annual flag-burning ceremony Thursday afternoon at the Herman Mihalich Memorial River Launch in Monessen.

The posts make an effort each year to encourage the public to deposit their worn, unused or unwanted flags in the bin located outside Monessen Public Library or bring them to the ceremony so they can be disposed of in a respectful manner.
