Intermediate Unit 1 (IU1) recently celebrated a milestone event with the official launch of its innovative Career Mobile Lab at the IU1 Central Office in Coal Center. The event, which attracted leaders from across the region, marked the beginning of a new chapter in providing hands-on career education and opportunities for students throughout Fayette, Greene and Washington counties.
Representatives from the Claude Worthington Benedum Foundation, WQED Pittsburgh, the Consortium for Public Education, and several local school districts were in attendance, along with elected officials and other key stakeholders from across the tri-county area.
The launch of the Career Mobile Lab was made possible through funding support from EQT, the Claude Worthington Benedum Foundation, and other community partners.
The rain held off just long enough to ensure that guests could stay outdoors and fully engage in the day’s activities, which featured networking, interactive learning experiences, and exploration of the new mobile lab. Virtual reality (VR) headsets were also on display outside the lab, offering guests an opportunity to experience cutting edge technology firsthand.
Attendees were welcomed with lunch from Greene County Career and Technology Center’s food truck, CTC Eats.
Guests had the opportunity to explore vendor tables and engage with representatives from various partner organizations, learning more about the expansive programs and career readiness opportunities the mobile lab will offer.
Speeches were delivered by several IU1 leaders, including Jenny Lent, assistant to the executive director for educational programs, IU1 Executive Director Dr. Donald Martin and Elizabeth Meerdo, career readiness coordinator. Each speaker highlighted the collaborative efforts behind the creation of the Career Mobile Lab and emphasized its pivotal role in preparing students for the workforce by providing hands-on experience in a range of careers.
“It has been a long time coming since we sat down and started to have these conversations where we’d say we throw mud off the wall and see what sticks,” Martin said. “Obviously this stuck, and this is a very, very special day for us.”
The IU1 Career Mobile Lab is set to travel to schools across the region, offering students the chance to explore various career fields through state-of-the-art technology and interactive activities. With a focus on STEM education, career readiness, and post secondary planning, the lab will serve as a vital resource in equipping students with the tools they need to succeed in the modern workforce. The mobile lab can also be made available to the Northern Panhandle of West Virginia, if requested, due to its proximity to southwestern Pennsylvania and IU1’s strong relationship with the education system there.
