Charleroi boys beat Waynesburg to move to 10-0

By JEREMY SELLEW

For the second time in 11 days, the Charleroi boys soccer team shut out Waynesburg Central, 5-0, in a Section 4-2A game.

Dylan Klinger finished with a hat trick and Landon Barcus had the other two goals for the Cougars, who moved to 10-0 on the season and 9-0 in section play.

With the win, the Cougars maintained their one-game lead on Mt. Pleasant in the section standings.

Max Goodwin got the clean sheet in goal after another standout performance by his back line.

The Cougars jump back into section play Tuesday at home against Greensburg Salem.

South Park 2, Belle Vernon 1

After falling to the Eagles, 7-1, in the first meeting of the season, the Leopards hung around and just missed pulling off the upset over Section 1-2A’s first-place team at James Weir Stadium.

South Park scored the game-winning goal in the final minute when Ella Voyten put home a cross.

Abby Russell scored the lone goal for Belle Vernon (6-7, 5-3) in the first half off an assist from Chessa Mertz.

BVA head coach Tracy Lovett was happy with the heart her team played with Wednesday.

“This was an exciting game between the first- and second-place teams in the section. It was tied 1-1 late,” Lovett said. “They’ve been beating section teams by scoring in double digits all season. I’m so proud of how my team played tonight. We played quality soccer against a quality team. You don’t lose when you learn, and we learned we can play with a top team.”

The Leopards travel to Ringgold Monday to a 7 p.m. kickoff.

Plum 3, Eliz. Forward 0 The Mustangs (9-1, 8-0) remained atop the Section 4-3A standings with a shut-out win over the host Warriors.

Makenna Anderson needed only one save to get the win in goal.

Adysson Davis made eight saves for the Warriors (3-5, 3-4) in the loss.

EF travels to Kiski Area Monday for a section tilt.

Thomas Jefferson 4, Laurel Highlands 0

Olivia Della Lucia went for a brace and Sami Maglicco and Kayla Marcinko each scored as the Jaguars (6-4, 5-1) rolled over the Mustangs (4-5, 2-4) in a Section 3-3A contest.

Nyla Kiral, Annmarie Graham and Maddy Gula combined for the clean sheet in goal.

The Jaguars are back in section play Tuesday on the road at Oakland Catholic.

Bentworth 1, Waynesburg Central 0

Brina Orsatti sent a flick towards the goal and Megan Keturakis put it behind the Raiders’ keeper for the only goal of the game to give the Bearcats (9-1, 4-1) a thrilling 1-0 win over Waynesburg (8-2, 4-2).

“That’s a really huge win tonight on the road against a tough Waynesburg team,” Bentworth coach Tyler Hamstra said. “It was a big team effort. We looked like a veteran group seeing out a game, not a young group.”

The Bearcats host California Monday.
