Magic in the air: Magician entertains kids as part of BV library’s summer program

Children’s laughter filled the air, creating a joyful atmosphere at North Belle Vernon’s Community Bank Park, as a popular magician provided some outdoor entertainment and education.

Sponsored by the Belle Vernon Public Library, “Adventure Begins at Your Library,” was staged Wednesday by magician Steve Haberman.

To the delight of local youngsters, Haberman put on a show for the kids, from doing tricks with a piece of rope to pulling chocolate chip cookies out of thin air.

Haberman has been performing his entertaining and educational magic shows for kids since 2005, and says he loves working with kids and making them smile.

“I have a degree in engineering and my first show was a science show, so I thought it would be good to teach kids about science,” Haberman said. “In 2005, I quit my real job and I’ve been doing educational shows for kids ever since.”

Haberman does shows for kids in western Pennsylvania, Ohio and northern West Virginia. He has more shows to come throughout the area.

There were more than a dozen kids at Wednesday’s magic show and parents who were in attendance laughed as much as the kids.

Parent Ashley Radomile said she appreciates the opportunity the library gives to kids to attend an event like the magic show.

“It opens a lot of opportunities for other kids to come together, socialize, learn and have a cool experience that they might not have gotten if the library would not have done this,” Radomile said.

Belle Vernon Public Library Director Elina Filander says this is the fifth year they’ve hosted Haberman and she hopes to have him back next year.

The Belle Vernon library will also be hosting more events for their summer program this year and Filander says they’re excited to be doing more.

“It’s a lot of fun, the thing that is really nice with us having the park and the playground, kids can come and play first, get tired and then be ready to sit down and hear some stories,” Filander said.

Filander said if someone misses a program event, they can stop by the library to pick up a takeand- make craft to take home.

The Belle Vernon Public Library will be hosting more free events at 11 a.m. Wednesdays in July at Community Bank Park, including the following:

• July 3, Adventure America

• July 10, Adventure in Space

• July 17, Adventures in Your Mind

• July 24, Adventures in the Wild

• July 31, Adventures of the Deep
