Bartolotta’s bill allowing year-round motorcycle inspections passes Senate
The bill now moves to the House of Representatives for consideration.
The Pennsylvania Senate passed a bill sponsored by state Sen. Camera Bartolotta, R-Carroll Township, that would permit motorcycle safety inspections to occur throughout the entire year.
Under state Vehicle code, motorcycle safety inspections must be performed from March to October. However, motorcyclists traverse Pennsylvania roadways throughout the calendar year. According to Penn D O T , there are nearly 850,000 licensed motorcyclists in the state.
Bartolotta’s legislation could provide riders more opportunities to have their motorcycles inspected, which may also lessen the burden of mechanics during spring and summer, as the bill would allow an additional four months each year to perform inspections.
“My bill maintains the safety we expect on our roads while offering owners more convenience regarding when they would like to have their motorcycles inspected,” Bartolotta said in a statement. “It would also help to even out the demand auto mechanics face, making it easier for everyone – including those who aren’t motorcycle owners – to access important services.”
PennDOT lists the following items as required to be checked during a motorcycle inspection:
• Suspension components
• Steering
• Braking systems • Tires and wheels
• Lighting and electrical systems
• Glazing (glass)
• Mirrors
• Fuel systems
• Speedometer
• Odometer
• Exhaust systems
• Horns and warning devices
• Body
• Chassis Under the bill, “motorcycle registration would continue to be tied to the month the vehicle is to be inspected.”
The bill will now head to the state House for consideration.
