Paula Jean Plowey of Twinsburg, Ohio, formerly of Donora, passed away on Dec. 4, 2023. Paula was born in North Charleroi, Nov. 21, 1948, daughter of the late Paul and Marianne Cohill of Donora. She graduated from St. Leonard Parochial School in Monessen, where she was the recipient of the American Legion Award for highest honors and Mon Valley Catholic High School’s Class of 1966. She attended Seton Hill College and California State College, earning her bachelor’s degree in teaching. She was the art teacher at St. Edward Elementary School in Herminie for 10 years and was named Art Teacher of the Year in the Greensburg Diocese in 1973. After moving to Philadelphia, she served as director of the Catholic Youth Organization for 10 years. In this capacity, she was editor of the Philadelphia Youth monthly newspaper and supervised and coordinated many events, including Hands Across America, the papal visit to Philadelphia in 1979 and Project Santa Claus, where she delivered gifts to the children of Philadelphia each Christmas Eve. Later, she and her husband moved to Florida and followed their dream of opening their own art supplies store, Masterpiece, in Clearwater. Here they spent many happy years entertaining and providing supplies for many prominent artists in the Tampa area. After retiring to Donora, she joined St. Andrew the Apostle Parish, where she enjoyed being a member of their Christian Mothers organization and the Holy Rosary Confraternity. She also was proud to be a third-generation member of the Ladies Ancient Order of Hibernians, Mary Ellen O’Neil Division No. 4 of Washington County. In recent years, she moved to Ohio to be closer to her daughter. In addition to her parents, Paula was preceded in death by her husband of 50 years, Charles Plowey, in 2020; and her son in law, Dennis Maurer in 2016. Surviving to cherish her memory are her daughter, Caroline Maurer and grandchildren, Makena and Remington Maurer of Chagrin Falls, Ohio. She also leaves behind her five beloved siblings: Patricia Loversidge Garber (Greg Garber) of Donora, Carole Cohill Seader of Donora, Cathy Cohill (Joe) of Volant, Pa., Sherri Jaskolowski of Cameron, N.C., and Sheila Cohill of Donora. A Mass of Christian burial will be held for Paula and Chuck (who passed away during COVID restrictions) at St. Andrew the Apostle Parish in Donora at 10 a.m. Saturday, Jan. 6, 2024. Interment will follow in Sacred Heart Cemetery, Monongahela. To share a condolence, please visit www.massafrafuneralhome.com.
