Girls Shootout Classic on tap Jan. 13
By the Mon Valley Independent
Once again, the Mon Valley Independent will help field the MVI Girls Shootout Classic on Martin Luther King Jr. weekend, with a bit of a schedule alteration this season.
The event will be held over one day, Jan. 13, at California Area High School. Last year’s event covered two days, Friday and Saturday.
“Last season, we saw the quality of play drop a bit because it was brutal on the teams. When it came to scheduling, I think it became a bit of a safety issue for the players,” MVI Sports Editor Jeremy Sellew said. “Teams played section games Thursday, played back-to-back games at our event Friday and Saturday. The next Monday, they played another section game. Regardless of them being teenagers full of energy, four games in five days is a lot. We’ve seen a good response to the new format.”
The field will be set with eight local teams. Monessen pulled out of the tournament and was replaced by Frazier.
“California is very excited to host the girls’ Shootout again this year,” Trojans coach Melanie Greco said. “It’s a great opportunity for local teams to play and feature some of the best girls talent in the area.”
