The California (PA) men’s basketball team trailed by as many as 23 points in the half and 19 with just over eight minutes remaining in the game to visiting Wheeling Wednesday night.
The 13th-ranked Vulcans turned up the pressure and played like one of the top teams in the nation from that point, rallying to stun the Cardinals, 94-90, at the Convocation Center.
The Vulcans (8-0) got 35 points from sophomore sensation KJ McClurg and 25 from Zyan Collins, both of whom were instrumental in the comeback.
Cal outscored the Cardinals, 52-33, in the second half, including a 27-8 run over a span of five minutes to tie the game at 85 with 2:57 to go.
“At the media timeout the message was all about fighting. These guy showed me the fight they have tonight,” Cal head coach Danny Sancomb said. “I told them to play for pride and chip away.”
