Bruce E. Smith, 79, of Finleyville, Somerset Township, passed away unexpectedly on Monday, Dec. 4, 2023, at Allegheny General Hospital, Pittsburgh. Born Aug. 20, 1944, in Washington, Pa., he was the son of the late Harold W. and Margaret Kelley Smith. Bruce was a 1962 graduate of East Washington High School and after graduation, he attended Massanutten Military Academy and Youngstown State University. Since 1972, Bruce had been the owner of Ontario Machine Co. in Eighty Four where he was still working. He was an U.S. Army veteran who served as a combat medic during the Vietnam War earning the National Defense Service Medal, Vietnam Service medal with four Bronze Service Stars, the Bronze Star with First Oak Leaf Cluster, the Army Commendation Medal and the Combat Medical Badge. Methodist by faith, Bruce was always proud to have been a member of the Mon Valley Honor Guard and Firing Squad. An avid bowler, he was a member of the Washington Elks and Washington VFW Post 729. He is survived by his wife, Janet Fawcett Smith, who he married June 18, 1976; a stepson, Daniel Henry of Speers; a sister, Margaret Ellen Fulmer of Canonsburg; sister-in-law, Barbara Smith of Washington; four nieces, Margie (Bob) Frederickson, Marilee (Jane) Smith, Linda Carson, Amy (Frank) Smith; three nephews, Hank (Anya) Brown, Harold Brown and Patrick Smith; three great-nephews, Alex, Colin and Matthew; and a great-niece, Emily. He was preceded in death by his brother, Harold W. Smith; his sister, Mary Ann Brown; and a niece, Debbie. Friends will be received at MARSHALL MARRA FUNERAL HOME, 216 Chess St., Monongahela, 724-258-6767, from 6 to 8 p.m. Monday Dec. 11, 2023, where a service will be held at 11:15 a.m. Tuesday, Dec. 12, 2023, with Pastor William Lusk officiating. Interment will follow in the National Cemetery of the Alleghenies with military honors conducted by the Mon Valley Honor Guard. Services will be also conducted in the funeral home by the Mon Valley Honor Guard and Firing Squad at 7 p.m. Monday.
