Sylvia Whiten – Charleroi

Sylvia Whiten, 87, passed away Tuesday, Nov. 28, 2023, at Premier Washington Health Center. She was born June 15, 1936, to George and Kathrine Yadrick Humphries. A 1954 graduate of Charleroi High School, she received a Bachelor of Science degree from California State Teachers College. During her time in college, she met her future husband of 66 years. She had a school teaching career of more than 30 years. Sylvia was an active member of the Greater Charleroi Community Development Corporation as well as the Charleroi Garden Club, Charleroi Football Parents Association, Mon Valley Quilt Club, Catholic Daughters of the Americas and numerous other clubs and organizations in Charleroi and throughout the Mon Valley. She was always ready to volunteer her time to help with the Charleroi Volunteer Fire Department and other community groups. In her spare time, Sylvia most enjoyed spending time with her grandsons. She also enjoyed quilting, needlework and calligraphy. Left to cherish her memory are her loving husband Robert “Bob” Whiten Sr.; a son, Robert (Janice) Whiten Jr.; a daughter-in-law, Linda Whiten; and two grandsons, Sean (Kelsey) and Ian (Lauren) Whiten. In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her son, Sean Whiten; two sisters, Gloria Eckhardt and Delores Humphries; and numerous nieces and nephews. A gathering of family and friends will take place from 6 to 7 p.m. Monday, Dec. 4, 2023, at LEONARD M. PAVLIC FUNERAL HOMES INC., 235 Fallowfield Ave., Charleroi, and a blessing service will begin at 7 p.m. in the funeral home. Online condolences can be made at www.pavlicfuneralhomes.com. In lieu of flowers, donations can be made in her memory to the Charleroi Volunteer Fire Department.
