Mark Steele was sworn in as McKeesport’s new police chief during Wednesday’s council meeting.
Steele, who served as assistant police chief since February 2020, has been a part of McKeesport’s police force since he was hired in 1996. He became a full-time officer for the city in 1999.
“There’s no question we’re in good hands with Mark’s leadership,” city Mayor Michael Cherepko said. “I look forward to working with Chief Steele… And I want you to know you are already an incredible asset to this department, and you will continue to do so. With all of my heart and soul, I know you’re going to lead us in the right direction.”
Before McKeesport-based Magisterial Judge Eugene Riazzi swore in Steele, he asked the long-time McKeesport officer if he had ever envisioned becoming the chief of police.
Steele said that he hadn’t, which was met with laughter from the crowd of more than 40 people.
Former police Chief Adam Alfer pinned Steele’s new badge to his uniform following the swearing-in ceremony. Alfer and Steele were hired together by McKeesport council in 1996.
Alfer retired from the department last month after being named the chief of police for South Allegheny School District.
