California closes strong in win over Monessen

Friday’s Tri-County South Conference matchup between Mon Valley rivals California and Monessen almost resembled a basketball game. It was a game of runs. After the Trojans took a 23-0 lead, the Greyhounds rebounded with 20 straight points. But Cal had the final spree in the fourth quarter with 28 points, keyed by a pair of pick-sixes by Jake Layhue, in a 51-20 triumph over Monessen at Trojan Stadium.
