Carole Ann “Chookie” Amendola of Henderson, Nev., passed away on June 14, 2023, from complications following a stroke. Born May 1945 in Monessen, Carole was a 1963 graduate of Monessen High School, a 1971 graduate of Slippery Rock University of Pennsylvania and earned a master’s in education at the University of Pittsburgh in 1971. She taught health and physical education in the Chartiers Valley District before becoming a guidance counselor at Fort Couch Middle School in the Upper St. Clair District. She impacted the lives of students for more than 25 years, supporting their well-being and career planning, before retiring in 1997. Carole pursued a lifelong passion for tennis. She was a lead coordinator for the Glen Creek Tennis Club in Bethel Park and played on a USTA senior team in Pittsburgh. In retirement, she moved with her longtime partner, Bruce Janoff of Charleroi, to Henderson, Nev. Together they won the gold medal in the Henderson Senior Olympics mixed doubles competition for four consecutive years. Carole also enjoyed travel, trivia and “playing the slots.” She visited friends across the country and remained a devout fan of her Pittsburgh Steelers. Carole is survived by Bruce Janoff of Henderson, Nev.; her brother, A. Joseph Amendola of Washington, Pa.; her nephew, Michael Amendola (Jerilyn Fortsch) of East Northport, N.Y.; her niece, Julianne Amendola (Dan Jensen) of Minneapolis, Minn.; and two great-nephews, Michelangelo and Theo Amendola. She was the daughter of Julia Svec Amendola and Angelo “Orangie” Amendola, both deceased. No services are planned at this time. The family thanks the caring staff of Sunrise of Henderson for their support over the past year. Memorial gifts can be made to the charity of donor’s choice.
