Major sewer rehab project moving along in Monessen

The City of Monessen has been in the midst of an ongoing, massive sewer rehabilitation project that was granted funding from the U.S. Department of Agriculture in 2020, for more than a year.
The project was mandated by the Department of Environmental Protection in 2009 and the city received a total of $19,876,400 in a combination of a grant and loans through the USDA to repair and replace its 120-year-old sewer and stormwater lines.
Mayor Ron Mozer said it’s taken the city 15 years to get to this point, having just awarded a bid to two different companies for Phase 3 of the project. This phase has to be completed by Sept. 30, 2024, and includes work that will be done all over town.
Phase 3 is likely the largest portion of this work, so large in fact it’s been split into several phases itself.
Phase 3A will include fixing lines that range from 8 inches to 24 inches, using what’s called a “cured-in-place” process. It’s like inflating a long tube inside the pipe that bonds to the interior of the pip and creates an impervious and structurally improved pipe.
