Donora council candidates will remain on ballot

A Washington County judge struck down three ballot challenges in Donora Wednesday, ruling petitioners improperly served court documents.
The petition challenged the ballot nominations of Jim Brice, DeAnne Pavelko and Casey Perrotta. claiming all three improperly filed financial interest statements to the borough.
While all three candidates successfully filed financial interest statements with the county election board, each failed to file a copy of financial interest statements with the borough on time. The petition called for each candidate’s removal citing the technicality.
Judge John F. DiSalle heard from attorney Gary Matta, who represented petitioners, Donora Council President Mike McDowell, Councilwoman Jane Ackerman, Nancy Johnson, Civil Service Commission member Kim Leaver, civil service member Brian Pivovarnik and Charles Szakal Jr.
Among the challenged candidates, Pavelko represented herself while Brice and Perrotta were not at the hearing Wednesday.
