Dorothy L. Fynes Baxter – New Eagle
Dorothy L. Fynes Baxter, 97, of New Eagle, went to be with the Lord on Friday, March 3, 2023, at Penn Highlands Mon Valley Hospital. Born May 16, 1925, in Monongahela, she was the daughter of the late Howard and Gertrude Cater Fynes. She attended Monongahela High School and shortly after, during World War II, worked as a welder on LST Ships in Beaver and the former Liggett Spring and Axle in Monongahela. She was part of the original team that opened Eat’n Park in Monongahela and for over 25 years she worked in the quality control department of Corning Glass in Charleroi until her retirement. She was a member of First Baptist Church in Monongahela. Dorothy loved taking trips to Atlantic City with her girlfriends and late husband, Tom, and was looking forward to the 74th annual Baxter family reunion. She is survived by her daughter, Vickie Shurgott (Keith Haynes) of New Eagle; a daughter-in-law, Carol Baxter of Monongahela; seven grandchildren, Stephanie (Roger) Wineland of Monongahela, Jennifer (Vincent) Scalzo of Bethel Park, Thomas Baxter IV (Steve Varabkanich) of Monongahela, Samuel Shurgott (Trish Lyons) of Wildwood, N.J., Nicholas (Kristin) Shurgott of New Stanton, Stephen (Nicole) Shurgott of McMurray and Keith Haynes II (Becky Moody) of Monongahela; six great-grandchildren, Rhiannon Wineland and Logan, Maddox, Savannah, Brooklyn and Jaxson Shurgott. Preceding her in death were her husband, Thomas E. Baxter Jr. who died March 18, 2010; and a son, Thomas E. Baxter III, who died May 6, 2017; brother, Howard Fynes; and two sisters, Harriet Marek and Esther Huffsticker. Friends will be received from 2 to 4 and 6 to 8 p.m. Monday, March 6, 2023, at MARSHALL MARRA FUNERAL HOME, 216 Chess St., Monongahela, 724-258-6767, marshallmarrafuneralhome.com, where services will be held at 11 a.m. Tuesday, March 7, 2023, with the Rev. Mark Schollaert officiating. Interment will be held in Monongahela Cemetery. Memorial Contributions can be made to the charity of one’s choice in Dorothy’s name.
