Fred C. Owens, 95, of Carroll Township, after a fulfilling life, passed away on Aug. 14, 2022. He was born Nov. 1, 1926, in Newell, son of James C. and Henrietta Snyder Owens. After graduating from high school, he enlisted in the U.S. Navy. Fred was a World War II veteran and served in the Pacific Theater. After being honorably discharged, Fred attended California State Teachers College. Upon graduation, Fred was employed by the U.S. Steel Corporation and worked at the Clairton Coke Works. During his time with U.S. Steel, he held various managerial positions and retired as an assistant coke operation superintendent. Fred married Marlene Broggi and later had two children, Lynn and Fred Owens II. Fred remained very active in retirement. For many years, he was a coke operations consultant with UEC. His consulting assignments took him to different states as well around the world, including Russia and Mexico. He was a volunteer ambulance driver for Tri-Community Ambulance in Monongahela. Through Southwestern Pennsylvania Area Agency on Aging, Fred volunteered with the Pennsylvania Operation for Watersheds and Rivers collecting and sampling the water quality of different streams throughout Western Pennsylvania. He was a volunteer at the Benedum and Byham theaters for 24 years. Fred is a member of Saint Andrew the Apostle Church in Monongahela and the Mid-Mon Valley Shipmates. He enjoyed performing the flag ceremony with the Shipmates at various schools throughout the region. For many years, Fred was a volunteer election worker and election supervisor for Carroll Township and Washington County. When not volunteering, Fred was a fisherman, RV camper and traveler. He loved to fish with his son, grandchildren, and son-in-law. Fred, along with his wife, Marlene, loved to travel. They took many trips in his RV and visited all 50 states. He was also a world traveler; he particularly liked Europe, Asia and Australia. Fred enjoyed reading, especially Westerns by author Zane Gray and Civil War history. Fred is survived by his wife, Marlene, of 67 years; and his two children, Lynn Boucek and husband Charles of Upper St. Clair and Fred C. Owens II and wife Sue of North Canton, Ohio; four grandchildren, Daniel, Adam and Carolyn Boucek and Stephanie Owens; sister, Joan Owens Zeller and husband Richard of Dover, Del. In addition to his parents, Fred was preceded in death by his sister, Siona Owens. Friends will be received from 2 to 4 and 6 to 8 p.m. Monday, Aug. 22, 2022, at FRYE FUNERAL HOME INC., 427 W. Main St., Monongahela. A Mass of Christian burial will be celebrated at 11:30 a.m. Tuesday, Aug. 23, 2022, at St. Andrew the Apostle Church, Monongahela. Interment with military honors will follow in the National Cemetery of the Alleghenies, Bridgeville.
