Lee Supply finally put a mark in the win column with a thrilling 59-57 win over Edward Jones Wednesday in Mon Valley Independent Summer Basketball League action.
After trailing Edward Jones by 15 at halftime, Lee Supply chipped away at the deficit and finally used a 14-0 run to take the lead in the final minutes and didn’t give it up, despite playing every minute with only five players available for the game.
“I told the girls after the game how proud I was of them. To only have five players and get down early in the game, then battle back the way they did, showed how much heart they have,” said head coach Kaitlyn Slagus.
Edward Jones started strong on a 7-0 run and built themselves a 22-5 lead midway through the first half. Lee Supply answered with a 15-5 to get back within single digits. Tori Sydeski was a key factor in Edward Jones building that lead back to 15, going a perfect 4-for-4 from behind the arc for a 12-point effort in the first half.
The offensive opportunities weren’t as easy to come by for Edward Jones in the second half as Lee Supply dialed up the defense. Sydeski finished with 15 points scoring only three in the second half and Viva Kreis had 15 as well, well below her average in the league.
“I have to give a lot of credit to the defensive effort the girls showed and the stops they were able to get,” said Slagus.
Macie Miller, a rising sophomore at Mt. Lebanon, has been a defensive stalwart throughout the season but had one of her best performances in this contest.
“Macie’s defensive effort is second-to-none every game. I thought she did a great job guarding Viva Kreis which is not an easy task,” Slagus said.
