AMD Industries played some stifling defense and pounded the glass before running away to a 60-38 victory over Lee Supply in the first game of Wednesday’s Mon Valley Independent Summer Basketball League girls tripleheader.
The AMD (3-1) defense limited Lee Supply and MVISBL leading scorer Jasmyn Fisher to just three points in the win. They also dominated the glass by winning the rebounding battle, 48-20, at Marx’s Court Time Sports Center.
Three AMD Industries players scored in double figures led by Gateway’s Marina Grado with 16 points. Elizabeth Forward’s Bailie Brinson tallied 15 points and grabbed 13 boards, while Trinity’s Eden Williamson had 14 points and 16 rebounds.
Both teams started the game slow but AMD started to hit their stride and pulled away beginning at the four-minute mark of the first half.
“We started out very slow and the team was very quiet and not talking to each other,” AMD coach Bria Rathway said. “Once we started talking and pressing, I thought we started playing better. Then, we started to get the ball inside to Bailie (Brinson).”
Grado helped AMD get out early, scoring eight points to lead them to a 9-1 lead. Williamson scored on back-to-back layups, stretching the AMD advantage to 15-3.
But Belle Vernon Area’s Jenna Dawson drained three triples to get Lee Supply back into the game. Her first three with 8:27 left in the half was Lee Supply’s first field goal of the game. Then, Dawson’s make with 5:21 to go in the half brought Lee Supply within three points at 20-17.
