Last season, Cedarbrook only won a single game in the Mon Valley Independent Summer Basketball League.
Cedarbrook checked that goal off the list on Monday’s opening night and gave new head coach Mariah Ward her first win by using a second-half surge to cruise to a 61-41 win over Edward Jones at Marx’s Court Time Sports Center.
“Everything from here out is easy. That’s a big win and it’s even bigger for the girls that were on the team last season,” Ward said. “Now, we need to go out and do it again Wednesday.”
For the second season in a row, Trinity’s Alyssa Clutter was the No. 1 overall pick in the draft. She elected to leave Edward Jones and declared free agency. She showed why Ward said it was a “no brainer” selecting her first overall by dropping a game-high 20 points. She had 12 in the second half as Cedarbrook (0-1) overcame a one-point halftime deficit.
“Alyssa was great. She did all the things we needed her to do,” Ward said. “I told her just to go out and play her game. Now, I just want to help bring her some more structure to it. That’s what we’re going to do the rest of this summer season.”
