With construction season kicking into high gear, PennDOT reviewed and highlighted Monday what projects will look like across District 12, which includes Fayette, Greene, Washington and Westmoreland counties.

The 2021 construction season will include five highway projects, 21 bridge replacements or rehabilitations, three safety improvements and 37 projects on local roadways or bridges.

Gov. Tom Wolf said the scope of projects is a delicate balance.

“I am pleased to announce a list of transportation projects for the southwest region that represent balancing the needs of the interstate, national highway, secondary, and local networks within our vital transportation system,” Wolf said. “It is through the continual efforts of our staff in the construction, design and maintenance teams of PennDOT that we are able to preserve and improve so many of our roadways and bridges even during these challenging financial times.”

Of several projects soon to begin or be completed this year, many are on Interstate 70.

District 12 executive William Kovach said the improvements to the I-70 corridor are in Westmoreland and Washington counties.

“Upgrading I-70 in Washington and Westmoreland counties provides major improvements to our transportation system,” Kovach said.
